The snapshot reveals "Ancestree," a crochet installation rooted in Cardiff, Wales, UK. Wrapped in postcard dimensions (105/148mm), it's a glimpse into a project that resonates with collaboration, community and homage to all ancestors.
The Wales Millennium Centre's "Your Voice" exhibition marked the venue's revival after 16 months of pandemic-induced closure. With over 400 artists participating, it explored our collective aspirations post-pandemic and reflected on the drastic changing events of 2020, from the global reckoning spurred by George Floyd's death to the shifts in our environment.
Ancestree served not only as an installation but also as a platform for artists to showcase their talents. Flip the postcard, and you'll uncover details of these creative souls.
In the midst of 2020's chaos, I found solace in nature, particularly during walks among the trees. Ancestree embodies themes of community, nature, and interconnectedness, reminding us that despite disruptions, new patterns emerge.
Inspired by the sacred baobab trees of West Africa, Ancestree is a tribute to heritage and wisdom. Crafted with natural sisal, it pays homage to Cardiff's maritime history, where people came from afar hoping to find a settled home.
Crochet, often underestimated, took a great role in Ancestree, celebrating the legacy of generations past. Like the resilience of that form of art (and it is an art form), it perseveres time after time (generations after generations). This installation weighted 400kg using 10.34 kilometers of rope from February to July 2021.
A heartfelt thank you to all who contributed to Ancestree's creation, the fantastic team of technicians (without them, this installation would not have risen!) and to you for taking the time to read this description. Find more details below about this project I was honoured to take part in.
Many thanks for reading.
